Blogging and travel seem to go together like milk and cookies. The idea of living as a digital nomad — heading wherever sounds good and writing about it along the way — appeals to a lot of people, especially when writing about their experiences can help defray the cost of travel. BlogSherpa is an opportunity to do just that.
Lonely Planet is a great resource when it comes to travel information and, through BlogSherpa, travel bloggers have a chance to become a part of that resource. The system allows LonelyPlanet.com to display bloggers’ post.
Admittedly, Lonely Planet doesn’t pay bloggers directly for these posts. However, they are displayed with Google AdSense ads — and the blogger who wrote the post gets those advertising revenues. LonelyPlanet.com gets an estimated 1 million visitors a month (based on Quantcast‘s numbers). Those numbers lead me to believe that while a blogger probably won’t earn enough for a play ticket through Lonely Planet — but the check shouldn’t be anything to sneeze at, either.
It doesn’t hurt that BlogSherpa offers an opportunity to reach an audience that most travel bloggers will reach on their own. It could be a useful component to a larger blogging strategy — and building up a website that can support your travels. I won’t go so far as to suggest that it’s a perfect option for every travel blogger, but it’s something that is at least worth exploring.
To sign up for BlogSherpa, there are instructions on the Lonely Planet Labs site: the instructions amount to creating an account on LonelyPlanet.com and submitting your blog for consideration, along with your Google AdSense ID. Both an AdSense account and an account on Lonely Planet are free to set up. LonelyPlanet.com’s staff will then review your blog for inslusion and let accepted bloggers know within 7 days.
I just got accepted and started tagging my blogs for Blogsherpa. I’ll admit that I am a little skeptical that I am simply donating my, what used to be unique content, to Lonely planet for a few clicks a month on adsense or to our website. Like you said, it is worth checking it out.
