The Book is Delayed

My book, Working Your Way Around the World, was scheduled for a July release right up until this morning. That’s when I got an email from my publisher, officially announcing that Duffie Books is closing its doors and my contract has been canceled. I’ve spent most of the day thinking about my alternatives. As I see it, I have several:

  1. I can start shopping the manuscript around for another publisher. I already have a couple of leads on publishers who would be a good fit, and I have a lot of confidence in my manuscript. I’d be pretty surprised if the book was out any time before early 2010, though, and even that’s probably stretching things.
  2. I could publish the manuscript pretty much as it is as an ebook here, on this site. Between the editing that’s left, designing the ebook and my own travel schedule, you’d be able to purchase the around the planned launch date (July).
  3. I could rework the manuscript into several shorter ebooks — it currently includes sections on finding a job abroad, telecommuting and building your own business. I’d be able to add a lot of the time-sensitive material I decided wouldn’t work in a book, like information about the current financial crisis. I could have the first, shorter ebook out at the end of June.

I’m surprised by how hard of a time I’m having making a decision: I’ve contributed to several books, so I’m not particularly worried about seeing my name in print. I feel a little strange about asking you to go out and buy a book which recommends simplifying your life so it fits in a suitcase.

So, here’s what I want from you: tell me your opinion. Go down to the comments section below and tell me whether you want a book or an ebook, how long you’re willing to wait and all of that. No matter what you tell me, I’ll keep posting free articles on this blog — and I’ve already planned a few ebooks for this site in the coming months. So, please, share your honest opinion.

Judgement of Solomon. Publish a few chapters as a semi-standalone eBook. See if it makes some money. Use it as a tease for potential new publishers. Hedge your bets. See what works. Don’t commit until you see the colour of somebody’s money. Good luck. Matthew

You mentioned that it had sections on finding a job abroad and building your business. I
think, if I were you, I would split it into two ebooks. One for finding a job abroad and the
other for building your own business. Telecommuting might fit into both. Two books would
be more lucrative than one, I think

And I don’t know if you are familiar with a website called “Escape Artist” but I have been
told they publish that type of material so you might want to take a few minutes and take a
    look.

  • I don't know too many women who can afford to take a year off and travel. That's no reason to skip on long term travel, though. Between telecommuting, work visas and networking, it's perfectly possible to pick up and move to different parts of the world on a regular basis — and work along the way.

Most women have a passing familiarity with the au pair concept. We focus on jobs that you can be proud to put on your resume: from finding a job abroad to building a business of your own, we've got the resources you need.
